TONIGHT’S TALENT:

Gabriel Santiago & Peter Stoltzman |  Joy in Friends

In the decade-long collaboration between Brazilian guitarist Gabriel Santiago and jazz pianist Peter John Stoltzman, the two have recorded and performed together in a trio, quartet, quintet, and big band, in the U.S. and in Brazil. Now, for the first time, they are touring together as a duo, and releasing their first duo CD, Joy in Friends.

Santiago and Stoltzman first met in Austin, where they were completing doctoral degrees in composition and education, respectively. Stoltzman recalls, “When I heard Gabriel’s music, I was instantly hooked by his gorgeous harmonies and heartfelt melodies. I told him I wanted to be his Lyle Mays [referring to Pat Metheny’s career-long collaborator]. Gabriel and I became so deeply bonded by our similar passion for music, for emotional harmony and themes…we both drive our improvisations towards ecstatic peaks…we’re like brothers born from similar musical influences and intentions.”

The music on their new CD was recorded at Colorado Sound Studio in late 2016, when Santiago first came to Denver to perform with Stoltzman. Santiago says, “Peter and I were planning this recording for some time. I was so excited to renew our musical journey together when we finally managed to setup the studio dates and a tour in Colorado, a place that has been dear to my heart for a long time. Peter is such an unique musician in so many ways and being on the stage with him has been one of the most precious moments of my life. I can’t wait to share this music with audiences here and around the world…”

Santiago and Stoltzman’s music conveys a range of deep emotions, and a stylistic crossover from Brazilian to Jazz, merging the timbres of acoustic guitar and piano in an inspired and joyful reflection of their friendship.
